It is the tax Filing season!
If you see me pulling my hair out, if you see me distraught and crestfallen, worry not. It is just the time to file tax returns in India and I am the victim!
Well, it is the tax filing time of the year in India - July 31 is the last day. They do extend it at times, but I rather get this over with soon.
Filing taxes is frustrating; it feels like a maze intending to trap me. The taxman lurks around innocuous questions like “Do I own a racehorse?” (hell no! I would know about it if I did). The taxman prowls, waiting for the prey to fall into the trap - waiting for the gotcha!
Lee Kwan Yew believed taxes should be so easy to file that a 6th grader should be able to do it with the help of a calculator. I wish for that utopia.
People need to trust the government officers in India. Sadly, when the British left, they left behind their extractive ruling bureaucracy. The government officers want to RULE over us, normal citizens. They won’t SERVE. Not US, the common folk without power.
When that changes, you will have the better India we seek.
